In today’s social media world, we tend to only share the highlights. The bright spots of our personal lives are typically all we share, when in reality, most of our day-to-day is challenging and not always pretty. There are many reasons we do this. It’s always nice to share some positivity, right? Isn’t is better to share happy events rather than sad ones? But let’s be honest, sometimes we only want to share the good stuff because we want people to believe our lives are perfect. We all know life isn’t perfect, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good. I’ve come to really see the positives in struggling, although I’ll admit I don’t usually in the moment.
When selecting a photographer, it’s imperative not to fall into the trap of believing the highlights shown are an absolute representation of their work. There are lots of incredibly talented people out there. Many of my friends are photographers, and great ones! This post is not meant to be a knock on them or to say I’m the only photographer that puts together solid galleries for their clients. This is simply a plea for everyone to do their homework when selecting the right photographer for you.
Last year I was lucky enough to be flown to Hawaii to do work for a childhood friend and some other locals. Unfortunately, my friend had already paid someone else a lot of money for family portraits on their favorite beach, but were ultimately disappointed with the final product. While I’m happy to do a “re-shoot”, it’s sad when someone has to pay twice to get images they love. This happens often with headshots. I can’t tell you the amount of companies that have booked someone else for headshots just to be unhappy with the images and end up booking me.
I try to share a lot of images in my website galleries. In fact, my web developer just emailed me the other day and told me my portrait gallery is too large and is taking too long to load. Even still, I believe it’s important to share full galleries with my clients so you know what to expect. So, as 2019 comes to a close, here are a few examples of galleries from the last year. Click on the type of gallery you’d like to see and you’ll be redirected.
